This article is based on the Indian Education system. India follows a Mark/Grade based education system. Education has been a problem in our country and lack of it has been blamed for all sorts of evil for hundreds of years. We are in a stage where we have IITs,law schools, B-schools etc in the country. Students are encouraged to routinely score 80+ marks and even the students who score 80+ marks find it very difficult to get into big colleges. The competition for high scoring students has sharply increased through the years. But still we do the same old stuff. Large number of students study only to score marks in exams, and sometimes to crack exams like IIT JEE, AIIMS or GATE. The colonial British rulers imported this system in India to create clerks and civil servants for them and We have not deviated from that pattern till now. Some years ago, People prepared to join civil services and bank officer exams. Now people prepare to get into Engineering and Medicine. For very few good institutions that give quality education, there are thousands of terrible schools and Institutions and Universities to spoil the quality of education.

Building few schools and opening multiple branches will not solve the educational crisis in India. And a crisis it is – we are in a country where people are spending their parents life savings and borrowed money on education – and even then not getting standard education, and struggling to find employment of their choice. In this country, millions of students are victims of an unrealistic, pointless, mindless rat race. The mind numbing competition and rote learning do not only crush the creativity and originality of millions of Indian students every year, it also degrades the mindset of the people. Brilliant and innovative students are sidelined by the high scoring students. THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION IS GAINING KNOWLEDGE AND NOT MEMORIZING.

We also live in a country where the people see education as the means of climbing the social and economic ladder. If the education system is failing – then it is certainly not due to lack of demand for good education, or because a market for education does not exist. Education system in India is failing because of more intrinsic reasons. There are systemic faults that do not let our demand for good education translate into a great marketplace with excellent education services.

What has education given to the students? It has given them good mugging up power, memorizing power. It has destroyed the creativity and innovations of the student minds. It has given them a 25000 rupee salary. It has taught them only education can take them to higher levels. It has given them a slave-ready life with 25000 rupees coming to their bank accounts every month. It has given them money and NOT EDUCATION. The very purpose of education is gaining knowledge and not getting marks.
